Abstract

This research attributes the composition of the Garcineida to the bishop of Burgos, García de Aznárez, based on various historical documents in the archives of Burgos Cathedral. He also establishes its origin date, in 1099, the place and the reasons that led him to write it. Various biographical details of García de Aznárez and his family, unknown until now, are presented. This is the first text written by a Castilian cleric who called for an urgent reformation of the Church in the Middle Ages and whose example would be followed centuries later, among others, by Gonzalo de Berceo and the author of the Libro de Alexandre.
