Abstract

Videoinfo -- a new Chinese teletext system based on the extension of NABTS is reported. Three key issues, including Chinese character extension, graphic user interface, and program guide, are addressed in this paper. Summary The Videoinfo project, which is supported by the ROC government, intends to introduce teletext service, TV subtitling service, and program guide service to the residents of Taiwan. The basic requirement of these services is that they must use traditional Chinese characters, which include 540 1 frequently used characters, and more than 7000 next frequently used characters. This large character set makes it very special in the world. Therefore, none of the four teletext systems recommended by the CCIR [1] are suitable for this purpose without modification. Also, a friendly user interface is vital to these services, according to our survey. Again, none of the currently available teletext systems meet this requirement without enhancement.
