Abstract

The Osage tribe had a great impact on the early development of the central United States. Ethnohistorical research reveals a long history of contact between the Osage, and Caddo, and the Pawnee. Then, between 1673 and 1830, the Osage participated in Euroamerican trade systems which consequently affected the Osage cultural fabric. The Indian slave trade was one Euroamerican system in which the Osage engaged by intensifying traditional raiding patterns on old enemies such as the Caddo and the Pawnee. The Indian slave trade system, its area of operation, and method are described and possible Osage cultural changes, made to accomodate the trade, are discussed.
