Abstract
To determine and validate the waist circumference cutoff value that better identifies subjects with metabolic syndrome criteria in a selected Ecuadorian population, we sequentially enrolled 166 males selected from the health service of the Petroleum Ecuadorian Company (PETROECUADOR) in a cross-sectional study. All the participants met the following criteria: age between 30 and 60 years, absence of renal or liver failure, and no previous history of coronary or vascular peripheral atherosclerosis. Waist circumference was measured at the narrowest part of the body below the costal margin. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Quito, Ecuador, and all men enrolled provided written informed consent.
