Abstract
Abstract The pelecypod genus Replidacna was created by Jekelius to include a series of small species of Limnocardium from the upper Miocene of Banat, Romania, distinguished by exaggerated development of the hinge. Similar species have since been found in the Pannonian of the Vienna basin. The discovery of a large number of such shells in the Limnocardium microfauna of Pliocene deposits of Catalonia (Spain) leads to the conclusion that Replidacna merely represents teratologic forms of Limnocardium, a few of which reached the adult state.
