Abstract

Simulation of fluid dynamics problems is important for many science and engineering problems, including aerodynamic design optimization, plasma physics modeling, and for flow control. Surrogate models of fluid dynamic simulations are also important for design optimization, since optimization loops require many queries of the model. Projection-based reduced order models are a type of surrogate model that predicts the entire fluid flow, instead of certain only integrated quantities like lift and drag. This work develops an efficient projection-based reduced order modeling framework inside of the open-source fluid dynamics solver SU2 and tests the implementation on a steady, viscous NACA 0012 airfoil case with shape parameters. This work can help in the design of this kinds of surrogate models more quickly and with less knowledge of entry.
