Abstract

A progressing wave formalism is developed for surface waves, that is, for the solutions of a linear, hyperbolic equation which satisfy a linear, hyperbolic and stable boundary condition. The surface waves are shown to possess a phase, and an amplitude, determined respectively by constructing surface rays and integrating along these rays.
