Abstract

Two recent articles in Technometrics [1, 21 were concerned with statistical consulting. This note concerns the same subject, but discusses it from the point of view of training statisticians to be consultants. How does one learn to assist another scientist usefully? The approach being used at the University of Wisconsin to help students learn to consult is to expose them to problems, obtained by offering free statistical consulting to all researchers on the campus through the Statistical Consulting Laboratory, and to apprentice them under experienced consultants, the Statistician in Residence and the Director of the Statistical Consulting Laboratory. This report discusses some of the benefits and challenges of running the consulting training program as part of a consulting service.
