Abstract

In this paper, we consider a production planning problem of determining optimal machine selection and operation allocation in flexible manufacturing systems. We assume that there is a set of CNC machines with known processing capabilities, and there is a set of part types for imminent manufacture from the set of all part types that the FMS can produce. the objective is to develop a mathematical programming model to select machines and assign operations of part types to the selected machines such that the processing, transportation and setup costs are minimized. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the applicability of the model.
