Abstract

The use of geometric diagrams as a compositional device is well documented in the history of painting, drawing, architecture, and design. As a fine artist, I go a step beyond using geometrically placed lines as the basis for composition; I use geometric composition figures themselves as the subject matter for artworks. I invented a generative process to transform 2D geometric figures representing root rectangles. I describe the transformations as harmonic subdivisions, shapes, icons, or super icons. The various transformations of the root rectangles are subject matter for paintings or drawings on 2D surfaces. The process incorporates the elements of dynamic symmetry articulated by Jay Hambidge.
