Abstract

ABSTRACT Based on the previous laboratory model test results of Das (1978) on rectangular foundations in saturated clay and similar results obtained by other investigators for circular foundations, a tentative general procedure for estimation of ultimate uplift capacity of foundations (square, circular and rectangular) has been presented. This procedure is mainly based on an α-β parameter curve, obtained from experimental results, which appears to be a unique curve irrespective of the undrained cohesion of clay and length-to-width ratio of the foundation. The effect of suction force which generally develops below the foundations resting on soft clays due to the sudden application of the pullout force has not been included.
