Abstract

This paper develops and solves a new probabilistic economic load dispatch approach (PELD) for a power system, which includes combined heat and power (CHP) generation, heat-only, thermal, wind and photovoltaic units. Given the crucial role of load demand in power system operation, load uncertainties are taken into consideration and modeled using the two point estimation method (2PEM). The proposed PELD problem is solved using a hybrid imperialist competitive algorithm based on Nelder Mead approach (HICA- NM). Its performance was assessed using a modified 40-units power system incorporating several wind, photovoltaic and CHP units and subject to load and operational demand. The obtained results confirmed approach’s ability to yield optimal solutions in uncertain environments, thus enabling better management of modern power systems.
