Abstract

The twisting of electric cables is a major problem when physiological signals are recorded from freely moving animals. A new design for a swivel to overcome this problem is described. As the animal moves about, concentric printed circuits fixed to a rotatable shaft provide continuous contact with nickel-plated brushes of braided copper wire. The swivel has low electrical noise, it is easy to construct, inexpensive, and lends itself readily to modification.
