Abstract

We have found a preparation method of long-lived carbon foils 10 μ g/cm 2 thick for heavy ion strippers of tandem electrostatic accelerators. The lifetimes were 5–10 h under bombardment by 3.5 MeV Ar + beams with an intensity of 1 μ A/13 mm 2 . The carbon foils were made by using an arc-discharge evaporation source and a nickel chloride releasing agent which was evaporated on to a specially prepared glass slide at 300 °C. These foils showed a slow shrinkage in the irradiated area and a gradual elongation in the peripheral area.
