Abstract

The redox behavior of W and Mo ions on Pt electrodes in molten Na 2SO 4 at 1203 K has been studied in an O 2-SO 2-SO 3 ambient. W and Mo were added as Na 2MO 4 (M = W, Mo) to the Na 2SO 4 melt. Cyclic voltammograms showed two reduction processes for both species within the Na 2SO 4 stability range. The oxidation sequence for the tungstate ion showed one of the reduction reactions to be irreversible. For molybdate ions there are oxidation reactions corresponding to each of the reduction reactions. The characteristics of the cyclic voltammogram peaks are described.
