Abstract

Although research has suggested a number of desirable characteristics for on-line help systems, traditional design approaches have resulted in software containing many inadequacies and limitations. Here the deficiencies of current help systems are discussed and an expert system design approach to on-line help is outlined. The main components of such an expert help system are introduced.
