Abstract

In the quantification of human performance, the effects of stress can be dealt with objectively only if one first determines the relative stress-producing value of different conditions within the given operational environment. This paper presents a paired comparision scale of 32 common aircraft emergencies judged by 27 former pilots and aircrew members. The scale is intended primarily for use in human error analysis. A new emergency can be incorporated by matching it to one or more points on the scale, or the scale can be transformed to satisfy any new interpretation of the relationship between emergencies and stress.
