Abstract

It is well-known that several nonverbal codes act as complements and/or substitutes for the verbal code, and they may be analyzed from a pragmatic viewpoint. Among these codes, that of autonomous or emblematic gestures surely seems to be the closest to verbality. This paper tries to characterize pragmatically this kind of gestures and presents the way of establishing a first repertoire of emblems which can be associated with a variety of the Catalan language. Likewise, this paper discusses some factors which participate in the classification of the items compiled and which contribute to their cultural nature. These factors may also provide some new information about the process of conventionalization followed by these gestures.
