Abstract

A universal equation used to describe the behaviour of a potential chemical sensor (PCS) is proposed. The equation is based on widely presented experimental facts and not on thermodynamics. It has been used to discuss the behaviour of a PCS operated in the non-linear region. The meaning of the relative action coefficient (RAC) appearing in the equation is described. The slope of any PCS is not a constant and is a coefficient related to the RAC of both primary and interfering ions, and to experimental conditions. The effect of some factors on the relative error for the determination using a PCS are discussed. The validity of the equation is examined with some experimental results.
