Abstract

In recent years, an ongoing controversy in the vitreoretinal community has revolved around the role of early vitrectomy in the management of primary and recurrent retinal detachment. As vitreoretinal instrumentation has continued to evolve, it has become common practice for many vitreoretinal surgeons to perform a vitrectomy as the procedure of choice in retinal detachments that would routinely have been repaired with scleral buckling in the past. Dr. Ingrid Kreissig’s contribution to this debate, A Practical Guide to Minimal Surgery for Retinal Detachment, Volume 2, is a well-organized and cogent summary of the techniques and rationale of a minimal extraocular approach to the repair of retinal detachment. Thirty years of research and clinical practice in the management of retinal detachment are distilled brilliantly in this practical and provocative handbook.
