Abstract

The scattering and capture of right-handed neutrinos by anAbelian cosmic string in the SO(10) grand unification modelare considered. The scattering cross section of neutrinos perunit length due to the interaction with the gauge and Higgsfields of the string is much larger in its scaling regime thanin the friction regime because of the larger infrared cutoff of theformer. The probability of capture in a zero mode of the stringaccompanied by the emission of a gauge or Higgs boson shows aresonant peak for the neutrino momentum of the order of its mass.Due to the decrease in the number of strings per unit of comovingvolume in the scaling epoch, the cosmological consequences ofthe superconducting strings formed in this regime will be muchsmaller than those which may already be produced in the frictionregime; in particular as possible sources of ultraenergetic cosmicrays.
