Abstract

A portable electronic device has been developed that successfully detects rapid eye movement (REM) in sleeping subjects. The development was aimed at exploiting the high correlation between a subject's ability to recall dreams and his abrupt awakening a short time after the onset of REM sleep. The device is of clinical interest as a means of increasing the amount of raw dream material available for patients in psychoanalysis.
