Abstract

A new organic–inorganic hybrid compound, Na 6[HO(CH 2CH 2O) 4H] 3{Mo 36O 108(H 2O) 14(OH) 6[HO(CH 2CH 2O) 3H] 2} · ∼75H 2O ( 1) has been obtained in polyethylene glycol (PEG)/H 2O system with a good yield, and characterized by element analysis, IR, UV, TG, 13C NMR spectroscopy, electrochemistry and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. Compound 1 consists of the {Mo 36} clusters as the structural motif covalently decorated by PEG fragments. Such hybrid polyoxoanions are linked by Na + counter-cations, leading to one-dimensional chains. The adjacent chains are closely packed together into a three-dimensional supramolecular framework via extensive H-bonding interactions among polyoxoanions and the isolated water molecules.
