Abstract

The magnetic moment of iron atoms in the ordered alloy Fe3Si has been investigated by polarized-neutron analysis. The magnetic moment of iron depends upon the relative population of the surrounding atoms like it has been already found in Fe3Al. However the moment of iron atoms with Si as nearest neighbours is lower than the moment of the corresponding iron atoms in Fe3Al. This result is related to the different number of 3p electrons in Si in respect to Al.
