Abstract

A polarimeter that permits routine measurements of the vector polarization of deuteron beams is described. The polarimeter is based on d- 4He elastic scattering and has been calibrated against existing d- 4He analyzing power measurements. The analyzing power of the polarimeter is large and varies relatively slowly with energy for deuteron energies between 2 and 14 MeV. Although the polarimeter is intended for use primarily with purely vector-polarized deuteron beams, application to beams with non-zero tensor moments is also discussed.
