Abstract

The needs of the severely disabled, especially in communities where there is a paucity of professional manpower inspired this research. The aim was to refine and validate a play package, consisting of a daily multiple measurement instrument (DMMI) and a package of play activities for the facilitation behaviours reflecting the different developmental domains, i.e. sensorimotor, cognitive, communication and social–emotional development. During the pre-experimental phase face and content validity of the DMMI was established and the play package was developed. The experimental phase investigated the construct and convergent validity of the DMMI. The cause–effect relationship between the activities and changes in single, gradually acquired behaviours of children with intellectual impairments was also investigated. Based on the findings validity of the play package was established, thus proving that the DMMI measures the behaviours that it claims to measure and the play package facilitates the development behaviours reflecting the different developmental domains that it claims to facilitate.
