Abstract

Abstract Comets, volatile bodies whose environment depends on their distance from the sun, are presented in a way which highlights the essential physical processes involved. The contributions of past space missions such as Giotto and VEGA are discussed, as well as the potential benefits which might accrue from future missions such as CRAF.
