Abstract

This paper presents the results of measurements using particle image velocimetry (PIV) that were conducted to examine the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil in angles of attack ranging from 13 to 19. Two and three-dimensional (stereoscopic) PIV measurements were carried out in a subsonic wind tunnel, in the Aeroespace Technical Center (CTA) at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE), Brazil. The angles of stall of the NACA 0012 airfoil for Reynolds number from 2.5 × 10 to 4.0 x10 were measured with PIV and the results obtained were in good agreement with tufts visualization. In addition, three-dimensional PIV measurements in the empty wind tunnel were performed and the results were compared with hot-wire anemometer measurements in order to check the accuracy of the three-dimensional PIV calibration.
