Abstract
The Kikori River Basin in the lush tropical rain forest of central Papua New Guinea is home to a startling array of wildlife. The ecosystem’s biologically diverse community of plants and animals includes more than 700 species of birds, 15 000 species of flowering plants, and more than 300 species of fish, amphibians, and reptiles—some of which are found nowhere else on earth. The basin makes up about 6% of the country’s land mass but holds 30–50% of the island’s species in several major animal groups. It is home to the idyllic Lake Kutubu, whose strikingly blue waters have been left pristine by centuries of isolation.
