Abstract

A Pilot Survey of Carbapenem-ResistantEscherichia coliandKlebsiella pneumoniaeMediated byK pneumoniaeSerine Carbapenemases in a Regional Referral Hospital in British Columbia

Highlights

 • To the Editor: The first Canadian report of a Klebsiella pneumoniae-producing Enterobacteriaceae in K pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) was described in 2009 by Pillai et al [1]

 • A six-month pilot study of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species was performed as a preliminary evaluation of the prevalence of KPC-encoded resistance in these commonly isolated bacteria

 • The study was conducted on patient isolates from Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) – a 250-bed regional referral hospital located in Kamloops, British Columbia (BC)
