Abstract

A cold cathode PIG discharge ion source is used for direct end extraction of negative ions. Optimal operating conditions for the production of H −, O − and O 2 − ions are determined with various source parameters. Production mechanisms of the negative ions in the source are discussed. The total collision cross-sections of H − in H 2, O 2, Ar and CO 2 in the path length of the vacuum chamber of a two-directional focussing mass spectrometer are measured by a beam-attenuation technique. The results are found to be in agreement with the electron detachment cross-sections obtained by other authors.
