Abstract

Purpose: Following a total knee replacement (TKR), many adults receive outpatient physical therapy (PT) to address post-surgical pain and functional limitation. However, PT rarely targets inactivity following surgery, which is a major gap; previous studies show that time in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) changes little after TKR. It is critical that adults after TKR engage in MVPA to offset their elevated risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and early mortality. Outpatient PT is well-positioned to deliver an intervention that encourages MVPA in this population, since patients are seen several times a week for multiple weeks after surgery.
