Abstract

A method of measuring the variation of reflectance of a cloth is described. The results correspond with the assessment of fabric irregularity by experts. The results are influenced by the size of the aperture and by the amount of surface hair on the cloth. For fabrics knitted from a series of 18 worsted yarns differing in mean twist and irregularity, a highly significant correlation was found between the variation of fabric reflectance and the yarn irregularities. This correlation was of the same order whether the yarn irregularity was measured as variation of yarn diameter measured optically or as variation of mass per unit length measured electrically.
