Abstract

A phenomenological model is presented which describes ion mixing in a dilute system consisting of a thin marker layer in a metal matrix. The model is based on the concept of a thermally-activated diffusional process in a global cylindrical thermal spike as formulated by Vineyard. Activation energies of impurity diffusion are calculated using approximate formulae. The model is successful in representing the available data of ion mixing of markers in noble metal matrices (Cu, Ag, Au), where the thermal-spike mixing mechanism dominates. The current model is an extension of the phenomenological model for ion mixing in metallic bilayers.
