A reliable new chopper for the control of dc traction motors is presented. Design criteria of the chopper are described. Performance characteristics of the motor are computed and compared with the conventional phase control to establish the superiority of the chopper and the preferred type of control. Experimental verification of the basic ideas involved is carried out.
