Abstract

During 1962 and 1963, the dominant cow-dung-inhabiting muscoid Diptera were collected to determme the seasonal activity of Aphaereta pallipes (Say). During both seasons, Raumia querula (Walker) was the preferred host, Orthellia caesarion (Meigen) was second and the face fly, Musca autumnalis De Geer, was third. The highest parasitism of M. autumnalis in one collection was 78% on September 27, 1962. A. pallipes was colonized for 18 months with O. caesarion as the host. Induced parasitism averaged 44.4% (range 0-100%), and 0-23 parasites emerged from host puparia. The life cycle for A. pallipes averaged 18.9 days, the sex ratio was 10 males to 13 females, and longevity of the adults was about 4 days.
