Abstract

The photophysical properties of the perylenebis(dicarboximide) dye DBPI were investigated in different sol—gel matrices. Monomeric DBPI is highly fluorescent in sol—gel and composite material (CM) glasses. DBPI has a strong tendency towards aggregation in sol—gel glass and the dimeric species is predominant at high concentrations in sol—gel thin films. In CM glass aggregation can be suppressed even at high concentrations. A quantitative description of the dimer⇌monomer equilibrium of DBPI in sol—gel glass is presented.
