Abstract

We point out a variational method which is applicable to a class of quiescent collisional magnetoplasmas diffusing from a state near the local thermodynamic equilibrium and enbedded in an equilibrium magnetic field with one ignorable coordinate. A perturbative expansion is introduced for the solution of a variational principle stemming from the drift Fokker-Planck equation and the resulting hierarchy of equations is investigated.
