Abstract

Expressions of doubt about prophesying successfully the emergence of new subjects are made and that their emergence and progress in increasingly determined by government and business is observed. Specifically, attention is then paid, in brief, to The Royal Society of London's Volumes on Technology for the decade ahead, materials processing in space, the prospect of space colonies, oil platform removal, iceberg fracture and the future importance of wood. Apprehensions about excesses in computer modelling are raised and the future importance of the study of fire and impact engineering noted. The paper concludes with comments about the future of educational and research publications in respect of type, price and output volume. Some useful ‘histories’ in mechanics that could be written are identified. The value of research for allaying public apprehension about “big” technology is reffered to and the subject of Advanced Manufacturing commented on.
