Abstract

The American biochemist Kary Mullis passed away on August 7, 2019, at the age of seventy-four. He will be remembered as the inventor of the polymerase chain reaction, a revolutionary method for copying segments of DNA. Mullis was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his invention. In this short essay, fellow Nobel laureate Richard Roberts fondly recalls time spent together.
