Abstract
The task of building up a personal medical reference index can be simplified and made much more efficient by applying some of the recent advances in the field of information storage and retrieval. Coordinated systems, by allowing cross-references of documents, are more desirable than uncoordinated systems. The " accession number indexing system " seems to be the most efficient and suitable for a personal medical reference index. With this system two card files are required: one contains a " reference card " for each article, with the relevant details, a serial number, and any comments. The other file contains " keyword cards ", one for each concept or feature under which an article can be filed. The serial number of a new reference is entered on those keyword cards that most aptly describe the article's contents. Reprints can be integrated into this system by storing them in box files by serial number of the reference.
