Abstract

A performance phantom for quality control in mammography was designed in order to improve the efficiency of the phantoms used in the programme 'Dose and Quality in mammography'. The aim of the programme is the optimisation of mammography in each unit and it is recommended by the Health Ministry in Italy. The new phantom has the same size and the same atomic composition as the previous ones but a new set of embedded details. A small solid state detector is incorporated into the phantom and its response is sent to a digital exposure meter. Thus image quality and exposure can be assessed at the same time. The energy dependence of the exposure meter is lower than ±10% in the mammography energy range. A simple daily quality control to verify whether a mammography system operates at optimal conditions (i.e. acceptable exposure and image quality) could be done using the device described.
