Abstract

M RS. HELEN JONES was at home caring for her sister's children. She was preparing to do the family ironing, when the phone rang. A voice said, This is Western Pennsylvania Hospital. We have a bed ready for you, if you will accept it but you must be here by three o'clock. So once again she packed her bag and came to the hospital. Mrs. Jones was 16 years old when her first son was born at West Penn. She had a long and difficult labor. A few weeks later she noticed pain and swelling in her ankles, wrists, and other joints. She was re-admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of rheumatic fever. Since then, she has had many colds and has been generally weak.
