I hated home visits as a young GP, especially those that were requested out of surgery hours. The ring of the telephone elicited a Pavlovian response of panic and irritation. The panic, I think was a residue of my time as a junior hospital doctor, when there was always a fear that the next call I had would be to a situation I could not cope with.
