Abstract

In this paper, the passive generation of Q-switched pulses in a Tm:YAlO3 (Tm:YAP) bulk laser using a MXene Ti3C2Tx based saturable absorber (SA) was demonstrated. The SA was prepared by spin-coating method and its nonlinear absorption property was characterized by a nanosecond pump laser. Average output power of 160 mW for the Q-switched laser was obtained at a repetition rate of 68.6 kHz, corresponding to a 2.33 μJ pulse energy and a 2.62 W peak power. The linewidth of the Q-switched laser was 2.5 nm, which was much narrower than the 6.3 nm for continuous-wave operation. Besides, a shortest pulse width of 811 ns was obtained at a repetition rate of 56.1 kHz. This work demonstrates that Ti3C2Tx Q-switched Tm:YAP laser can achieve nanosecond pulse width and narrow linewidth simultaneously.
