Abstract

The future of America seems problematic, as time and events edge the nation closer to some geopolitical, economic, or environmental disaster that could tumble it into authoritarianism. These heightened times call for the highest qualities of civic character from both leaders and citizens, but, sadly, the obligations of democracy have apparently taken a distant second place to a rampant morality of personal advantage. Lost in the hedonic scramble are the Founding values and the vision of the good society they were to bring about.
