Abstract

The interesting properties of EuS, a ferromagnetic semiconductor, made it worthwhile investigating the quasibinary phase diagram, EuS-FeS, in order to determine whether doping ,with FeS is possible or an intermediate phase occurs in the system. DTA, X-ray and metallographic investigations were carried out on EuS-FeS specimens in the composition range lo-70 mole-% EuS. The specimens were prepared by the thermal decomposition of oxalates in flowing H,S, as described for the pure Eu-II-~halcogenides’. Mixtures of europiumII-oxalate and iron-II-oxalate in the corresponding molar proportions were reacted in flowing H,S at 1000°C to form the starting material for DTA runs. These were carried out as previously described’ using alumina crucibles in an inert atmosphere of argon. The specimens were heated at 10 K/min to approximately 1400°C and cooled down at the same rate. After the DTA runs, metallographic sections and
