Abstract
The results of chemical analysis of 86 seabed, 15 beach and 10 river samples from the Cardigan Bay area are presented together with comparative results from 8 samples of the Pleistocene sediments and 6 samples from the Aberystwyth Grits which outcrop along the shoreline. The samples were analysed for ferric and ferrous iron, manganese, titanium and phosphorus. From the relationship between mean size and elemental content, and inter-element relationships, it is concluded that the four hosts for the elements are: ( 1) the accessory mineral suite; ( 2) lithic fragments; ( 3) surface coatings on grains; and ( 4) the clay minerals. The average content of the four elements is similar to that of the “average sandstone” of Turekian and Wedepohl (1961).
