Abstract

This short paper seeks to illustrate how the last pagan rulers in Europe, the grand dukes of Lithuania conducted their extensive diplomatic relations with their Christian neighbours. The Lithuanians fit into a long tradition of Christian dealings with pagans and show a willingness to adapt their manner of upholding international agreements in accordance with the practices of their partners. It highlights an hitherto ignored note on pagan Lithuanian customs which was written into the margin of his Vergil by the poet and diplomat, Francesco Petrach.
