Abstract
We show a p-adic limit formula for Gauss sums, which implies the Katz limit formula ( in “Automorphic Forms, Representation Theory and Arithmetics: Proceedings” (S. Gelbart et al., Eds.), pp. 165–245, Tata Inst., Bombay, 1979) and therefore the Gross-Koblitz formula ( Ann. of Math. 57 (1980) , 83–96).
